Overview

COLING (International Conference on Computational Linguistics) is a premier biennial academic conference established in 1965 that brings together researchers, practitioners, and industry professionals in natural language processing and computational linguistics. The conference is held in diverse locations globally and serves as a major platform for showcasing developments in NLP from both academic institutions and industrial research departments. COLING 2025, the 31st iteration, takes place in Abu Dhabi from January 19-24, 2025, and is organized by Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI).

History

COLING was first established in 1965 as a biennial conference held in even years until 2024. The conference shifted to odd years starting in 2025 due to scheduling conflicts with other NLP conferences, extreme weather considerations, and Ramadan timing. COLING is governed by the International Committee on Computational Linguistics (ICCL), a board of senior researchers that selects local organizers and general chairs for each conference. Unlike ACL, COLING operates without formal organizational structure or centralized bank account, with finances managed entirely by local organizers. In 2025, the conference returned to being a standalone event after a joint conference with ACL in 2024.

Reputation

COLING is widely recognized as one of the premier conferences in computational linguistics and natural language processing, attracting top researchers from leading academic institutions and emerging research centers globally. The conference is valued for its diverse geographic hosting and inclusive approach to both academic and industrial contributions. Participants appreciate the opportunity to network across academia and industry, though some note the biennial schedule limits frequency of participation. The conference maintains strong credibility within the NLP community as a venue for significant research dissemination and professional development.
