Overview

SIGMOD (Special Interest Group on Management of Data) is an ACM special interest group dedicated to the study, development, and application of database management systems and data management technology. It serves a community of software developers, academic and industrial researchers, practitioners, users, and students working in database and information technology fields. SIGMOD is primarily known for sponsoring the annual SIGMOD/PODS conference, one of the most selective and important conferences in the database research community.

History

SIGMOD evolved from FIDET (File Description and Translation), which was started in January 1969 by Diane and John Smith, James Rothnie, and others as a Special Interest Committee. In September 1970, FIDET became a Special Interest Group, and in 1974 it was renamed SIGMOD. The SIGMOD Conference began in 1975 in San Jose with Frank King as the first program chair, while the PODS Conference started in 1982 in Los Angeles. The two conferences became co-convened in 1991 to encourage interactions between theory and systems research within the database community.
