Overview

VidCon is an annual online video and creator convention founded in 2010 by John and Hank Green. It is best known as a meeting point for creators, fans, advertisers, and platform/business executives in the digital video ecosystem, especially around YouTube and creator-led media.1

The event has expanded beyond its original Southern California roots into an international brand with editions planned in multiple regions. Its market position is as a major creator-economy trade-and-fan event rather than a content producer, with the Anaheim event serving as its flagship U.S. gathering.13

History

VidCon was founded by John and Hank Green and first held in July 2010 in Los Angeles, where it sold out in advance with more than 1,400 attendees.1 Viacom acquired VidCon in 2018, and the event later became part of Paramount Global after the Viacom–CBS merger.1 In August 2024, Paramount sold VidCon to Informa, which placed it under the Fan Expo HQ unit.1 The brand has since continued to operate and expand internationally, with events planned in multiple cities and regions.1

Reputation

VidCon is widely regarded as one of the best-known conventions in the creator-economy space, especially for YouTube and online video culture.12 It is valued for concentrated access to creators, industry networking, and educational programming, while some attendees criticize costs, crowding, and variability in the fan experience from year to year.2 The brand is generally seen as established and institution-like rather than niche, but also as dependent on the health of the broader creator economy.12
