Overview

Cary Audio Design is a manufacturer of high-performance audio and video equipment, specializing in vacuum tube amplifiers, solid-state amplifiers, digital streamers, and home theater components. Founded in 1989, it expanded from tube-based music systems to include solid-state products and digital sources. The company is one of the few remaining U.S. producers of vacuum tube amplifiers and operates as a small, independent business targeting audiophiles.

History

Cary Audio Design was founded in May 1989 by Dennis Had in Cary, North Carolina, initially focusing on vacuum tube audio amplifiers. Key early products included the CAD-300SE single-ended triode amplifier in 1989 and the CAD-805 in 1992, which remains in production. In the mid-1990s, it expanded into home theater with DVD players and surround processors; facilities later moved to Apex and then Raleigh. Dennis Had retired in 2009, selling his shares to partner Mark Tint, who continues to own the privately held company.
